Hernia Centre
The Hernia Centre is a surgical facility within the Clinic for General, Visceral and Vascular
Surgery, in which inguinal hernia, abdominal wall hernia, umbilical hernia and incisional hernia
are treated surgically at high quality level and with quality assurance. The quality assurance is
provided via the HERNIAMED quality assurance study. The compliance with quality standards is more
important for the acknowledgement as a centre than the number of surgeries carried out annually.
The quality indicators are, in addition to the frequency of post-operative complications, the rate
of recurrences (repeated hernias) as well as the long-term recovery of the patients and above all
the frequency of undesirable side effects of the surgery, in particular the number of patients with
chronic pain and possible impairment of quality of life. For the expressiveness of the quality
assurance it is essential that as many patients as possible agree with the documentation of their
data in the follow-up programme. The depersonalisation of the data is a matter of course.
We at the Hernia Centre exhibit the necessary competence for the secure treatment of also
complicated hernias (large hernias extending up to the testicles, recurrences, incarcerated hernia,
status post previous surgery, e.g. prostatectomy).
A centre organises information events for patients and registered physicians in private
practices.
The centre takes care of the further training of surgeons. Training courses on models,
lectures and live demonstrations are held on a regular basis.
The scientific processing of the results and their publication as well as the implementation
of studies are equally among the tasks of a centre as the cooperation with the industry regarding
the further development of technologies and medical devices
