Interdisciplinary Abdominal Centre
The treatment of gastrointestinal diseases is an important major field of the EuromedClinic’s
scope of services. The interdisciplinary cooperation between the departments of gastroenterology,
visceral surgery, oncology and radiology is of great significance for the treatment quality. In
order to further intensify and develop this major field, the above-mentioned disciplines have
designed and established a Competence Centre for Abdominal Diseases under the direction of Prof.
Dr. Thomas C. Böttger, chief physician at the Clinic for General, Visceral and Vascular Surgery,
Dr. Mocny, internist, Dr. Schönekäs, internist and Dr. Eisenkolb, radiologist.
Patients with acute and chronic abdominal problems are regularly treated in the EuromedClinic
on an interdisciplinary basis. The basic principle is to plan and jointly provide medical care to
patients suffering from benign and malignant diseases of the entire gastrointestinal tract by joint
surgery hours, joint visits and joint case conferences.
This so-called “problem-oriented patient management” is supposed to enable an individually
adapted treatment form through short decision-making processes.
The surgery hours offered in the Interdisciplinary Abdominal Centre are especially directed
at patients suffering from:
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
(heartburn, sour belching, asthmatic attacks, expectoration in the morning,
inflammations of the oral mucosa, unpleasant breath)
Functional digestive disorders
(nausea and vomiting, unpleasantly rapid feeling of satiety, chronic constipation and
diarrhoea)
Hepatic calculus, biliary calculus or cholangiopathy
(biliary colic, yellow discoloration of the skin, itching)
Pancreatopathy
(epigastric pain, abrosia, loss of weight)
Inflammatory intestinal diseases
(Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis)
Coloproctologic diseases
(diverticulitis, colon tumour, rectal tumour, haemorrhoids, perianal abscesses,
perianal fistulae)
Incontinence
(involuntary bowel movement)
EuromedClinic offers all state-of-the-art endoscopic (e.g. coloscopy, gastroscopy) and
radiological (CT, MRI) examination techniques and surgical measures.
The Competence Centre for Abdominal Diseases decides in interdisciplinary agreement whether
or not additional specialists, such as urologists, gynaecologists, oncologists, radiotherapists,
ENT specialists, neurologists, psychologists or psychotherapists are called on.
Whenever possible and reasonable, minimally invasive surgical methods are applied in
abdominal surgery. Thanks to Prof. Böttger’ great deal of experience, approx. 80% of the abdominal
surgeries are carried out using this technique.
Especially to patients suffering from cancer or other chronic diseases, this
interdisciplinary team work guarantees the optimum treatment concept and result.
Double examinations can thus be avoided, transfers become widely superfluous; the patients
can be discharged at an early stage. Due to the bundling of professional competence, the
best-possible treatment success can be achieved.
