In Germany, 30 million people belong to this risk group. If you also belong to
this category, you should discuss it with your practitioner. You should also ask about a
pneumococcus shot and if it is something which you might need.
The inoculation should be administered in October or November before the start of the
influenza season. The inoculation can even be administered later but must then be boosted once a
year. But remember – an inoculation will not save you from a “normal” cold.
The inoculation is relatively trouble-free. Occasionally one’s own immune
defences are stimulated and swelling or a reddish colour can appear around the area, where the shot
was given. A slightly heightened temperature or general feeling of malaise
for one or two days is also possible after the inoculation.
Good reasons for a flu shot:
One single inoculation per year is the safest protection against an infection with the
influenza virus. It is not only meant for your safety, but also for the safety of your family,
friends and endangered persons in your surroundings. The flu shot is free of charge for people 60
years and older, as well as chronically ill people of all ages. No additional payment or practice
fee is claimed.
